Day 11 - On Being 'Parents' To Our Ghanaian Kids

Tuesday, March 22 – Day 11
Kayleigh, Jess, Sarah, and I are sitting on one of a row of benches placed outdoors at the Methodist school which many of the children attend. We’re waiting for the mandatory PTA meeting being held at 9 AM to attend. Let me note that we arrived for the meeting at 9:53 AM. We brought the total ‘parent’ attendance up to 16 with 20 required to begin. Parents are threatened with a fine for failure to attend; their children are often caned.

Beauty was sick this morning. Chica had said she was sick two nights ago when Eric was here and whatever that then-undetectable illness was manifested itself this morning in the form of tiredness, lack of appetite, and a fever. Ma decided she (Beauty) would stay home from school today; as a result, I got to spend an hour this morning holding a sick little toddler. Other than occasional fussing and a repeated refusal to eat, she was generally quiet and sedate. Sick babies are sad but adorable.
